I don’t think we talk about Viktor enough. To Viktor, the Deathly Hallows symbol was like a swastika. And it was carved into a wall at Durmstrang. He had to walk past that symbol of fear and hate every day for years in the place he lived and studied. Other students even mocked him and adopted the symbol, but he kicked their asses. And THIS is why it bothers me that the HP fandom adopted the Deathly Hallows logo as its symbol. The wand/stone/cloak symbol is a glaringly obvious allegory of the swastika. It was an innocent and holy symbol in the beginning, it was appropriated by a genocidal movement and now it is so tainted that it is impossible to use in its original meaning (at least in Europe, I’m not getting into an argument about Indian people using swastika-ish images.)
So why, why, why did it become the first identifiable image associated with the HP fandom? Why don’t we draw Harry’s scar on things instead? That represents Voldemort, and it’s still less evil than the alternative.(via lurknomoar)
